Purim - The Hidden Spark of Esther

The Artnotes above are from my newest coloring book for families and adults called, "Happy Purim!" available HERE.

Next week, Wednesday night and Thursday (March 23-24, 2016), is the holiday of Purim. When I was a child, I liked to dress up in costume for Purim, but when I grew up, I thought it was just a holiday for children. Boy, was I ever wrong! As I began to learn about the deep, chassidic and mystical secrets of Purim, I discovered (and continue to discover) layers of hidden meaning in what, at first, seems like a simple story and just a fun holiday.

The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar, the month of happiness. It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot to destroy them. The heroine, Queen Esther, saves the Jewish people. The Purim story is filled with secrets. Even Esther’s name means “hidden” in Hebrew. The whole Jewish nation is called Esther. Why?

G-dliness is hidden everywhere in this world, just as G-d was hidden in the story of Esther - not mentioned even once. And the G-dliness is concealed within us! We all have this hidden G-dly spark inside of us, waiting to be revealed in the garments of our soul, in our positive thoughts, encouraging words, and good deeds.

The main message of Purim is to never lose hope. No matter how hopeless your situation might seem, there is a G-dly spark hiding inside you, waiting to be revealed so that it can light up the darkness in this world. And, like Esther, G-d is depending on YOU to find and use the special talents that are your unique contribution to your family and friends, the Jewish people, and for the whole world to enjoy.

What G-dly spark is hiding inside of you, waiting to be revealed? What special qualities do you have that you can use to make this world a better place? Where in your life can you fan that G-dly spark into a loving glow?  I'd really like to know, so comment below and share your thoughts with me.
