The Gevaldig! series is a retrospective collection of Rae Shagalov’s art & soul journey.
Volume 1 contains Rae’s earliest Torah Artnotes as she travels to Israel and Crown Heights to gather the gevaldig wisdom of the last generation of exile and the first generation of Geula

"Artnotes" is a word coined by the artist to describe her graphic recording in calligraphy of the pearls of wisdom she had the privilege to hear and write in thousands of Torah classes over the last three decades. These calligraphy artnotes are, for the most part, copies of actual notes written during the classes.

The Artnotes in this first volume span Rae's spiritually momentous years 1993-1995, including her pivotal transition from a non-kosher life to meaningful observance of Torah, mitzvahs, and Shabbos, her first encounters with Chabad, and her first visits to Israel and Crown Heights, N.Y., the headquarters and neighborhood of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

The theme throughout volume one is the power of storytelling, from the secular workshops on multi-cultural storytelling in Arcata, California in the beginning, and onward through her journey to Israel to learn the unique qualities of the Jewish storyteller who tells stories filled with light.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe has said in many talks that ours is the last generation of the exile and the first generation of the Redemption. That’s why this collection is called, “Field Notes,” a sort of spiritual-historical record of what we’ll look back on as a unique time in Jewish history and Torah learning.
This is the first of 30 forthcoming volumes of the Gevaldig! Series. The Gevaldig!  retrospective series, lovingly handwritten over 30 years will help, G-d willing, to inspire our generation and future generations to bring forth the last holy sparks out of the darkness and usher in a new era of revealed light.
